There are many factors that can contribute to a person’s success in life. Whether he is at school or at work, a person is more likely to succeed if he is hard-working, honest, intelligent, responsible, and so on. But of all the possible characteristics that can affect one’s success, I believe self-confidence to be the most important for the following reasons.
The first reason is that when a person has self-confidence he believes in himself. He believes that he can and will succeed, and this gives him the courage to try new things. In order to be successful we must be willing to take some risks, so having self-confidence is very important. Another reason is that a confident person rarely gives up. When he fails he tries again and again until he wins. A final reason is that confident people are not afraid to show off their achievements. This is not to say that they should brag, but that they should gracefully and confidently accept the compliments of others. When their achievements are noticed more by others at school or work, they are more likely to succeed.
In short, I believe self-confidence to be the most important factor in success. It enables people to take risks, try again when they fail, and enjoy their accomplishments when they win. With these abilities, a confident person can succeed easily at school or work.
conceited
In china,there is a story .In the Han Dynasty,there was a tiny called Yelang on the southwestern border,small though it was ,its ruler was quite proud of his country,thinking it was big and powerful.Once a Han envoy visited Yelang,The ruler asked him:'which is bigger ,Han or Yelang?'
Later this idiom came to be used to refer to those who are capble of nothing yet are conceited.
So Modesty helps one to go forward, whereas conceit makes one lag behind.Pride goes before,and shame comes after.Modesty helps one to go forward.Knowledge makes humble,ignorance makes proud.
自负
唐代诗人韩渥写了一首名为《自负》的诗：“人许风流自负才，偷桃三度到瑶台。至今衣领胭脂在，曾被地仙痛咬来。”
自负，顾名思义就是有很多人过高估计了自己。自负之人，有些是自觉的，有些是不自觉的，要承担自负之名，谁人也不会毛遂自荐，而往往有些人还会把货真价实的自负当成自信而洋洋得意。
古代就有很多自负的人物，例如，努尔哈赤死后密令多尔衮即位，但是他母亲觉得多尔衮年纪轻轻没有支持和战功根本当不了大汗，她卖给皇太极这个当大汗的好处以求自保，但是皇太极得知了立刻走了，他说我皇太极要当大汗定要靠自己本事怎会接受别人施舍。由此看来，皇太极就是十分自负的人，常常自命不凡。
伊索氏曾说：“苍蝇坐在战车底轮轴上说道，我扬起了多少尘土啊！”这只苍蝇是一时有感而发还是内心深处早已根深蒂固的自恋情结尚已无法追究，但几乎可以肯定的是，它和人类世界的某些成员患上了共同的瘾癖——视野狭隘——这是直接导致他们认为自己就是救世主的错误观念的原因，因此也就导致他们的脑海中无时无地不萦绕着“地球离开了我就不再转动”的自我认知，但众所周知，多年以前哥白尼就提出“日心说”，因此，我们就暂且先把这种认知归为错误一栏。
自大者常分为两类。

A self-confidentperson believes that he is capable and worthy. He does not need to prove hisvalue to others or himself by seeking attention orshowing-off because he is secure and takes a positive attitude towards hisachievements. Meanwhile a conceited person generally has low-self esteem andshowcases what he feels to be superior qualities to prove his worth to himselfand to others
Self-confident people are generallyequipped with good interpersonal skills. If you like yourself, you expectothers to like you, and are therefore more inclined to adopt honest, open andtrustworthy behavior patterns. Meanwhile, conceited people may subconsciouslylook down on themselves, which often translates into negative interpersonalskills such as callous, self-centered behavior that can be off-putting to others.
So I also think that self-confidence is the making of a human being, butconceit is not the factor leading to success.

以前，我是个自信的女孩。自信使我如初升的太阳般充满朝气。那时的我对任何人、事、物都抱以谦虚的角度去看待。如果说我的成绩是股票的话。那时的股票一定是蒸蒸日上。那时我很喜欢与别人讨论解决难题，即使解不出来也很满足。我总是喜欢即不耻下问而又八婆的关心别人。明知道别人不是问我问题，我也是不顾三七二十一的插一脚进去。但自信的太多好处使我飘飘然了起来。我开始变得自负，上课总不专心听，经常搞小动作。自以为是天才不用听课就可以考的名列前茅，但是我错了，成绩公布后我才发现我原来是蠢材。股票直线下跌。自负使我有了从天堂掉入地狱；从云端掉入悬崖；从喜悦变成伤悲的感觉。原本让我八婆的同学，现在也开始八婆的回答我的问题，角色彻底的调换了过来。我不再是一颗光芒万丈的钻石，而是一颗暗淡无光的石头。在大海中，我迷失了前进的道路，没有指示灯能为我引路。自信、自负这两个风浪让我尝到前所未有的滋味。也让我明白到自信的重要性和自负的可怕性。
我是一个自信的孩子，在成长的海洋中，我承受过许多成功的快乐与失败的痛苦，他们总是时不时，陆续地“敲着”我的门，在它们的伴随下成就了一个自信的我，接受着风雨的洗礼。
紧张忙碌的期中考试过去了，一切暂时都回到了往日的平静，而我那颗心却依然跳个不停，还没忘却考试时的紧张。
我永远也忘不了那紧张的一天，那场生平以来第一次让我心跳加速的语文考试。至今回想起来，我的手还是凉的，不断的冒着冷汗。
考试的那天，当我将语文考试卷全都做完时，心中的石头算是“落地”了，认真地检查着题目，然而，当我检查作文的写字要求时，我仿佛是在大冬天又被猛地泼了盆冷水，心都凉了。天啊！我的作文离题了。也许是我看错了，太紧张了，怎么可能呢？然而，我的直觉，我眼前的事实告诉我，确实偏题了。顿时，我吓慌了。
怎么办？重写一篇吗？可是，时间一定不够。我紧张地看着手表。一定不够，该怎么呢？我好像看到时间悄悄地在我的思想中消失。不行，不行，你们回来啊！眼泪涌上眼眶。为什么怎么倒霉的事情偏偏会轮到我？我的两只手在相互不断的摩擦着。我多么希望时间可以重来！
