专四题目:电子词典

Many students today use electronic dictionaries instead of printed dictionaries. Some people say that this is a good thing while others disagree. What is one major advantage or disadvantage of electronic dictionaries?

专四范文:

One Major Advantage of Electronic Dictionaries

Electronic dictionaries are becoming more and more popular among students nowadays. As a result, they may eventually render printed dictionaries obsolete! Undeniably electronic dictionaries contain a number of merits in comparison to their printed counterparts and therefore, I would like to suggest one major advantage of electronic dictionaries.

Perhaps the most pronounced advantage of electronic dictionaries is that all of them are portable and consequently easy to carry around, whether in a pocket or a bag. Students can put the dictionary in their pocket and look up new words whenever and wherever they are. This is a huge advantage over the traditional large paper bound dictionary because size really does matter. This compactness means not only that electronic dictionaries are getting smaller and lighter as well as incorporating a bigger memory but also that dictionaries can be installed into other small portable devices such as mobile phones. Although smaller in some people's view means less availability of memory and other functions, with the increasing advances made in nanotechnology this is no longer the cases.

In the final analysis, electronic dictionaries are the by-product of the inexorable progress of computerization, miniaturization and nanotechnology which has meant that one of their biggest advantages is their small size while still enjoying all the benefits of earlier, larger models. (214 words)

专四英语作文高分范文:以“失败乃成功之母”为核心Learning from Mistakes: Failure as the Mother of Success

Mistakes are an inevitable part of human life, yet they often carry negative connotations. While some argue that mistakes teach us nothing, I firmly believe that failure is not only instructive but also essential for growth and success. By analyzing errors, accepting responsibility, and adopting a growth mindset, we can transform setbacks into stepping stones toward achievement.

1. Admitting Mistakes is the First Step to Learning

To learn from mistakes, one must first acknowledge them. Denying or blaming others for failures prevents self-reflection and perpetuates ignorance. For example, if a student fails an exam and attributes it to the teacher’s unfair questions, they miss the opportunity to identify gaps in their knowledge. Conversely, admitting a mistake shifts focus from self-pity to problem-solving. As the proverb goes, “A mistake is only a mistake if you fail to correct it.”

Key action: Take ownership of errors by saying, “This is my fault, and I will improve.”

Example: Thomas Edison famously stated, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” His willingness to admit and analyze failures led to the invention of the lightbulb.

2. The Difficulty of Admitting Mistakes

Despite its benefits, admitting mistakes is challenging due to societal pressures. From childhood, we are taught to associate failure with shame. Schools reward perfect scores, families criticize mistakes, and workplaces penalize errors. This fear of judgment leads many to hide failures or repeat them unconsciously. For instance, a businessman who ignores market feedback after a product launch may face repeated failures because he refuses to admit his strategy was flawed.

Root cause: The stigma surrounding failure discourages open discussion and learning.

Solution: Cultivate environments where mistakes are viewed as learning opportunities, not personal flaws.

3. Learning from Mistakes Drives Success

History and science repeatedly demonstrate that failure precedes breakthroughs.

Scientific progress: Penicillin was discovered because Alexander Fleming noticed mold killing bacteria in a neglected petri dish—a “mistake” that revolutionized medicine.

Personal growth: A person who loses a job may analyze their weaknesses, acquire new skills, and secure a better position.

Quotation: “Sometimes the best way to learn anything is to start out by making mistakes.” This highlights the value of trial and error in mastering skills.

Moreover, repetition of mistakes stifles progress. For example, a student who cheats on exams without addressing knowledge gaps will likely fail later. Thus, the key is to:

Analyze errors: Identify why a mistake occurred (e.g., lack of preparation, poor judgment).

Apply lessons: Use insights to avoid repeating the same error. As Edison’s example shows, “The key is to learn from your mistakes and never make the same mistake twice.”

4. Overcoming Fear of Failure

To embrace failure as a teacher, individuals must reframe their mindset:

Shift perspective: View mistakes as data points, not moral failures.

Set realistic goals: Understand that setbacks are part of the journey toward mastery.

Seek feedback: Constructive criticism helps identify blind spots.

For instance, athletes review game tapes to analyze mistakes, not to berate themselves but to improve performance. Similarly, entrepreneurs treat failed startups as experiments, gathering insights for future ventures.

Conclusion

Mistakes are not endpoints but catalysts for growth. By admitting errors, analyzing their causes, and applying lessons, we turn failure into success. As the saying goes, “The more mistakes a person makes, the more they will have learned, and the greater chance they will have of succeeding on their next try.” Therefore, we can and should learn from past mistakes to thrive in both personal and professional endeavors.

The Relationship between Loneliness and Wisdom

Loneliness is a subjective experience that reflects the discrepancy between one's desired and actual social relationships. Some people may enjoy solitude and find it beneficial for their well-being, while others may suffer from loneliness and its negative consequences for their physical and mental health. Wisdom, on the other hand, is a positive personality trait that involves the ability to use knowledge, experience, insight and empathy to think and act in ways that are pro-social, such as showing compassion, emotional regulation, self-reflection, balance between uncertainty and decisiveness, and social advice. Wisdom is often associated with better health outcomes and subjective happiness.

So what is the relationship between loneliness and wisdom? Are they mutually exclusive or complementary? According to some recent studies, there seems to be an inverse correlation between loneliness and wisdom, meaning that the wiser one is, the less likely one is to feel lonely, and vice versa. This correlation can be partly explained by the neurobiological mechanisms of loneliness and wisdom, as well as by the psychological and behavioral factors.

From a neurobiological perspective, loneliness and wisdom have opposite effects on the brain regions that process social information. For example, one study found that lonely people were more distracted by angry faces and had weaker activity in the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ), a brain area that integrates internal and external information. However, wise people had stronger responses to happy faces and enhanced TPJ activity. This suggests that lonely and wise people have different neural responses to social stimuli. Moreover, loneliness-anger response led to more activity in the left parietal cortex (important for attention allocation), while wisdom-happiness response led to more activity in the left insula (involved in empathy and other social features).

From a psychological and behavioral perspective, loneliness and wisdom also have different impacts on one's cognition, emotion and action. On one hand, the wiser one is, the more one enjoys being alone. When lonely, a wise person would spend their leisure time reading, thinking, and introspecting. Moreover, they become smarter, more humble, better at managing emotions, and able to make decisions in uncertain situations. On the other hand, loneliness means too much stress because one's expected quality of social relationships is not met. Loneliness can lead to anxiety, or even fear of failure, failure of social connection. But wise individuals are good at creating positive feelings, resilience and intimate interactions, so they do not feel lonely.

In conclusion, loneliness and wisdom are inversely related in many aspects. Loneliness is a negative personality trait that reflects one's dissatisfaction with their social relationships, while wisdom is a positive personality trait that involves using knowledge and empathy to think and act pro-socially. Loneliness and wisdom have opposite effects on the brain regions that process social information, as well as on one's cognition, emotion and action. Therefore, it is important to cultivate wisdom and cope with loneliness in order to achieve better health and happiness.
