什么是学习
在我国，学习这一词，是把“学”和“习”复合而组成的词。最先把这两个字联在一起讲的是孔子。孔子说：“学而时习之，不亦说乎？”①意思是，学了之后及时、经常地进行温习，不是一件很愉快的事情吗？很明显，学习这一复合名词，就是出自孔子的这一名言。按照孔子和其他中国古代教育家的看法，“学”就是闻、见，是获得知识、技能，主要是指接受感性知识与书本知识，有时还包括思的含义在内。“习”是巩固知识、技能，一般有三种含义：温习、实习、练习，有时还包括行的含义在内。所以学习就是获得知识，形成技能，培养聪明才智的过程。实质上就是学、思、习、行的总称。
一、学习是个体生存的必要手段
动物和人的生活都离不开学习。学习是动物和人与环境保持平衡、维持生存和发展所必需的条件，也是适应环境的手段。
动物要在后天环境中求得生存和种群延续，首先要依靠先天遗传的种群本能行为，但这种先天本能只能适应相对固定或变化较小而缓慢的外界环境。
动物和人为了生存下去，还必须通过学习获得个体经验。这种后天习得行为经验可适应相对迅速的变化，与先天本能相比，其意义显然要重要得多。譬如，一只小羊羔通过不断地向羊妈妈学习，知道了哪里可以寻找到丰富的食物，知道了怎样躲避狼的追捕。
