As the weekend draws closer, it's fairly obvious, even in China, that Christmas is around the corner. All the signs are there - seasonal restaurant advertising, festive music in the department stores and supermarkets, and decorations in the spirit of the occasion are everywhere.
The prevalence of the Christmas theme around Beijing has seemingly led some to question whether or not they should celebrate it, with invariably some argument in each direction.
The arrival of Christmas in China could have been via a number of different routes. Perhaps the first signs arrived with the Europeans, especially the British influence where Hong Kong is concerned.
Ultimately, though, it is certain that the widespread adoption of American popular culture channeled through Hollywood and the considerable output of TV series has brought Christmas, along with many other Western traditions.
Indeed, the commercialized holiday is enjoyed to some degree by many countries in the world, with traditions associated with the Christmas we know today dating back to hundreds of years before the formation of the United States, running back via the UK and Western Europe, even, as historians suggest, to Ancient Rome.
Many see the celebration as a Christian-only affair and this would be their reasoning behind not joining in. Certainly it is true that the festival we largely celebrate has its roots in Christianity, although some elements trace back further.
Undoubtedly, nations most commonly associated with this faith are the main force behind merriment, but equally today it has arguably moved beyond belief, with agnostics and atheists alike taking part for the general values of the occasion rather than the religious message that others take from it.
The general concepts are surely worth promoting though, even in China. Ideas involving generosity, peace, love and goodwill seem admirable. Personally, it seems the pleasant thoughts surrounding this far outweigh the religion connotations.
Equally, it is reasoned by those against it that it's not traditionally a Chinese festival, so it shouldn't be celebrated. They say China's unique culture should be preserved and therefore more attention should be paid to the Middle Kingdom's individual festivals and heritage.
Without a doubt, Christmas is a cultural import, but it does not fall across an important Chinese festival and the minor celebrations occurring in Beijing and other cities do not attempt to detract or draw away good feeling from those more traditional events, like Spring Festival. Providing one can do both, there doesn't seem to be much of an argument on this front.
Others see commercialism as the sole force behind the sudden uptake of this newer celebration in Chinese eyes. From supermarkets playing Christmas music, to the Village at Sanlitun covered in decorations, all have one target in mind - your wallet.
Not content with hijacking the Western festival to maximize profits back in the home countries of the festivities, these companies and their Chinese companions are seeking to gain from Christmas cheer here too. There's arguably some truth in this sentiment, but one feels that the benefits outweigh the supposed negatives.
The majority of Chinese people seemingly tend to take the view that it's up to the individual whether to celebrate it or not. Some do, some don't, but it's not overly important either way. Many will join their Western friends and those who don't may do something to get in the spirit, purely because they like the feeling behind it. Others will do nothing and this is surely fair enough. It's not a Chinese festival after all.
But as Chinese celebrations become more popular around the world as knowledge of them spreads, it doesn't seem right to cancel Christmas in Beijing. Those who complain about people enjoying themselves at this time of year just come across as killjoys.

西方节日在中国大行其道一个重要的原因，就是商家为了制造
商机而大肆宣传、渲染。实际上，圣诞节在中国早走了味，其在西
方所具有的文化内涵在我们这里并不突出，在更多人看来，无非是
一个购物、社交的凑热闹的日子，没有多少人真正是为了它的宗教
含义而去过节的。在现代社会中，许多人为了事业而客居他乡，像
